“Oh hi – any thoughts on somewhere good for a large group?”
“Hiya – where would you nip to for a decent curry ?”
“Should I really bother booking for Paolo’s or just go to Pizza Express/Strada/Bella Italia”
“Afternoon. Can you think of anywhere I can nip into later that won’t need a reservation? Somewhere polite I can take my mum. cheers!”
“What’s that place just outside the wall that does good sushi?”
For a small city, York has a surprising number of decent places to eat from very reasonable dining clubs to more expensive ‘dining experiences’ plus all the chains and tea shops in between. On top of that there’s a fantastic selection of coffee houses in which a thriving coffee scene can be sampled and great choice of places to enjoy real ale/craft beer.
I love food. We’re stuck with it and it offers the chance for minor acts of enjoyment on a much wider scale than the other biological functions we endure so why not use it to inject satisfaction into your life at frequent intervals? Thinking like that has led me to spend more than I should have on eating out and a corresponding eagerness to suggest places to eat. After I prattled on for a few years people seemed to take me moderately seriously so, as we find ourselves a few years later again, I thought I’d try and share a few thoughts on places round York to check out.
Off the top of my head I’ve put together a list of just over 60 places in and around York I’ve either eaten, would like to eat at, or think deserve another chance after a disappointment. I can’t afford to eat out every night so it’s going to take some time to cover all that (I reserve the right to give up in the event it becomes evident nobody cares) and I might even stick up a few favourite recipes.
The easy way to make this interesting would be to start giving places a kicking. There’re plenty of places around York I’ve little time for but I’m not going to make easy mileage attacking anyone, I’ve no motivation to skip honest comments though.
So….can I recommend a decent Italian? Yes! Paolos obviously! I’ll get onto that soon enough though…
